Federal Funding for Indigenous-Led Justice at Manto Sipi Cree Nation
I was proud to be part of an important federal announcement made right here in Churchill–Keewatinook Aski this summer.
On behalf of The Honourable Gary Anandasangaree, Minister of Public Safety, the Government of Canada announced $5 million in federal funding to Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak (MKO) to support Indigenous-led alternatives to incarceration for First Nations individuals. The announcement was made in this riding for a reason — and MKO’s leadership was a big part of that.

We are home to the communities most directly affected by incarceration rates, by the overrepresentation of Indigenous peoples in the justice system, and by the consequences of a justice system that was not built with rehabilitation for Indigenous peoples in mind.
Indigenous-led alternatives to incarceration are not a soft option. They are a smarter, more effective, and more just approach — one grounded in culture, community accountability, and the understanding that healing and restoration serve communities better than punishment alone.
Thank you to MKO and to the leadership of First Nations across northern Manitoba who have been advocating for this approach for decades. This investment is yours.
